Maria Goretti Centre secure extra night!!!

Good News We are delighted to announce that we have secured an extra night respite which started this week. We opened our doors in September 2014 and since then we have grown from strength to strength with our centre now opened 6 nights a week and catering for up to 80 families across the whole of Co Louth. We would like to take this opportunity to Thank each and every one of you for your continued support. Our fundraising campaign over the past two years has been overwhelming, from the young girls who cut their hair to all the athletes running races to groups of people organising community events and many more amazing fundraisers. We have become known nationally but it is the local communities all across Louth that has really made a big difference in allowing us to make our centre a real home away from home for the kids. Our next big project in the centre will be our outdoor sensory garden which will hopefully include a...

Defibrillator bought from fundraising efforts

Thanks to your fundraising efforts we have recently bought a Defibrillator for our centre and all our staff are currently being fully trained in using it. The cure for most cases of sudden cardiac arrest is immediate treatment with a defibrillator so having one of these on site at our centre is...

A Thank You Card from Muireann!!

A Thank You Card from Muireann!!

We received a beautiful card from a young lady who attends our centre and her mam has given me permission to share with all of you. Muireann calls our centre “The Lordship Spa” as this is the place she goes for her retreat from the rest of the world. Here’s what Muireann thinks of our centre: “My name is Muireann and I’m 17 years old and have lots of sensory issues, I am a very bubbly girl who likes to stay in my routine and the centre is ideal for my needs as the staff are good listeners and very kind. I love my colourful bedroom especially my double bed in it. They also have magical taps which turn on if you wave your hand in front of them. My favourite thing to do in the Spa is to relax in a big bubble bath while I stay there. I feel sad when I leave the spa to go home but my mammy always tells me that I will...

Testimonials

“My son has severe autism, an intellectual disability and epilepsy. Our lives revolve around him because of his behavioural issues. Until he came here this year he had never spent a night away from me. I could never have asked someone to have him overnight – his behaviour is too challenging. I was very anxious when we came here first, as any mother would be. But Tomas is 12 and he needs some independence. From the first moment, the staff took away my concerns. They focused on Tomas and he didn’t have to fit into the service, they fit the service around him. It’s about the child. It’s person-centred and it’s a high quality service. It has saved me and my family. I can get a night’s sleep, I can spend quality time with my other son. I can breathe, safely knowing that Tomas is not only in safe hands, he is having a great time.”

“My son has Autism, intellectual disability and other issues. I’m with him all the time. I never have five minutes – wherever he is I am. He can’t be on his own at all. Respite really helps us as a family and he loves coming here. He gets so excited coming in the door. With this respite service we can have normal family life.”

“My son can lash out. It can be difficult for his sisters to be around him all the time. The respite gives us that break. The staff here are angels and always go that extra mile.  If we didn’t have the respite we wouldn’t be able to look after our child full time and he would require residential care.  The respite means our child can remain at home.”

“My daughter has Global Developmental Delay and is visually impaired.  When she goes to respite she gets a chance to meet other wee friends and have fun on her sleepover. We recharge the batteries and do activities with the rest of the family.  When she comes back to us we are re energised and in good form which she benefits from greatly.  The respite is so important to us.”
